How background checks work

Background checks on Stoop are optional and caregiver-led. They are one more signal you can use when you are deciding who to hire — never a substitute for meeting someone yourself.

  1. Step 1

    A caregiver requests the check

Sitters, nannies and tutors can request a background check from their own profile whenever they choose. It is optional, and it is entirely up to the caregiver.

  2. Step 2

They consent and pay the one-time fee

The caregiver confirms their consent in the app and pays a one-time $20 fee, which covers the cost of running the screening through our third-party provider.

  3. Step 3

    The screening runs

The check is completed with our third-party provider. A standard check covers identity verification plus county, state and national criminal record searches. It typically takes a few business days.

  4. Step 4

A verified badge appears on their profile

Once the check clears, a background-check badge shows on the caregiver profile everywhere in Stoop, so families can see it while browsing, matching and messaging.

What a check does not cover

A background check is limited in scope. It does not guarantee anyone's safety or suitability, and it does not replace references, an interview, or your own judgment. We recommend asking for references and meeting every caregiver before you book them.
